It's been my experience that "mentally challenged" people so often seem to have higher E.Qs (Empathy Quotients) than so-called "normal people." They're often more undersanding, tolerant and forgiving of others.
Perhaps too many of us place too much value on "intelligence" and too little on empathy.

We don't choose to call someone mentally retarded, that is a medical diagnosis that is legally mandated. Each state has a slightly different definition (some may cut the age determinate off at 17, some at 18), but in the DSM-IV it states that in order to be labeled as mentally retarded you must have acquired the deficiency before age 18, (so people who have accidents that cause brain damage as an adult are not considered to be mentally retarded), you must have a measurable IQ of less than 70, and it must impact your daily living activities to the point of reducing your level of function-ability (like you are not able to maintain daily bathing, or can't tie your shoes). There are people with cognitive difficulties (the PC term for mentally retarded by the way) who are very happy and there are those who are not happy at all. It has to do with your perspective on life and not your intelligence level.
Now to speak to all these people who have answered you and told you that the more you know the less happy you will be BULL CRAP! What a gloomy and depressing life they must lead. If you have the ability and the capacity for knowledge then by all means pursue it. Life is as happy or as sad as you choose to make it and no amount of information will change that.

It's more that they have less responsibility, and are unaware of the problems that people face. After all if you were a labrador you wouldn't have any worries other than whether you were walked or fed. Same applies to people who are thick but go to normal schools - they don't worry about anything and pass their driving tests first time and lead happy uneventful lives and never get cancer.
Better off being a labrador than someone bright.

We are all individuals. We are all unique. We all have happy and relaxed days, and we all especially, have frustrating ones. Having empathy and patience is something we all need to practice a little more often in our lives. Appreciating what we actually have, and trying to smile a little more. As a personal note to myself, i always try to make at least one person smile everyday, and do one unselfish act to show others that ignorance really is not bliss!

I don't think so, I think it is because we are different. Our brain are different. We call them mentally retarded because they are living in our world. we think they are retarded because they act and think different from us. they are like people from other planet. We just need to understand that fact and not call them mentally retarded, because we are two different kind of people. People who are retarded are people who are like us, people who think like us but are idiot.

Yes we are the problem and it is caused by our lack of understanding these individuals and their needs. I think there should be more education for people. You could learn a lot from people with disability's and the way they cope with them.

i think the more you understand other people the more unhappy you will be. it is best to be superficially aware and to be 'retarded' - the sensitive suffer.
