I believe ghosts exist but we cannot explain them scientifically. And no one is weird that believes in them. Some people think others are crazy for believing in God but I believe in him too. Some people believe they are just echoes of the past like a continuous replaying tape.
Others feel some spirits are restless and can't pass on until they do something, just refuse to pass on, or don't know they're dead.
There are more things in this world/universe then any one can understand. No one 200 years ago thought anyone could get to the moon but its a fact now.

I am an amateur paranormal investigator, so I consider myself qualified to give at least an amateur response to this.
There are a number of theories regarding ghosts--far too many to bother listing here. The theory I adhere to is that ghosts are a form of non-local consciousness unbound by the constraints of a neurological medium. Translation: A mind floating around without a brain. I generally believe that there are two types of ghosts--entities that were once living beings, and entities that have never experienced life as we know it. Of the two entities, former-humans are generally the most rational and easy to understand. They remain human, even though they do not have a body. They typically present evidence of being consciously aware of not only their environment, but of the still-living people in it. Non-human entities have wholly alien psychologies and motivations. It is difficult to determine whether they are ignorant of living beings, or whether they simply don't care. Either way, their lack of consistent rationality lends creedence to the notion that they aren't spirits at all, but rather some force of the natural world that has not yet been properly analyzed and catalogued.
Science thus far has not been able to directly analyze a ghost. The closest we can come is analyzing the effects of a ghost (electromagnetic fluctuations, thermal variances, audiovisual surveillance, etc.), thereby inferring its presence. It's not unlike the manner in which astrophysicists detect black holes--they examine effects on the surrounding environment in order to determine what's going on.
Some last words: Remember that paranormal research is not about proving ghosts exist. It's about analyzing bizarre phenomena and determining the cause. It's very rare that we will stumble upon a situation where we have no choice but to say "Yes, this place is haunted." But I can definitely say that from personal experience, ghosts DO exist.

Due the the overabundance of evidence world wide about ghost sightings and haunted houses, I do believe that ghosts and poltergeists do exist.
As for "scientific proof", it is very difficult to prove but something that some people may consider proof is called EVP's (Electronic Voice Phenomena). There are a large number of people who go into places believed to be haunted and they bring along voice-activated tape recorders. Sometimes they will ask questions in hopes that they will hear answers when they play it back and other times they don't even need to ask the questions for the ghosts to talk to them.
I live in San Diego, CA and there is a man named John Lamb who is (or was) a police detective. Once, when he was on vacation in the battlefields of Gettysburg, PA, he saw an apparition (ghost) appear and disappear. He knew that he saw something but he was not sure what he saw so he did extensive research on the paranormal. Once he had a strong understanding about it, he decided to investigate 16 places in San Diego which were rumored to be haunted. He conducted the investigations as he would an official police investigation and he wrote a book called "San Diego Specters: Ghosts, Poltergeists and Fantastic Tales ". If he found enough evidence that the place was haunted, he showed the evidence. If he did not find proof, he said that he could not find enough evidence to declare the place haunted.
There is one house in San Diego, The Whaley House, which is in America's top 10 Haunted Houses.
