Lately I have been looking towards a system of secular morals. It seems that morals attached to a religious ideology creates problems in such a diverse country as the United States. So it seems, that a system of morals that disregards the necessity of religious belief and exists apart from this diversity in beliefs could end some of these problems. But is this possible? Can a system be developed that would allow for this? Please advise.

Yes. Right and wrong are just that.

In fact, because I take full responsibility for my actions, I am more moral than someone that believes that they will be forgiven on Sunday in Confession. I must live with my actions. They do what they will and expect forgiveness.

One doesn't need religion to govern. Our founding fathers agonized this question and determined that the rule of law is equally important. Reilgious belief has created problems for millinea and isn't likely to stop doing so. More blood has been shed on how to believe than for any other reason throughout history. It is patently clear that SECULAR government is the only practical solution given that the various religious sects can't ever agree to disagree without first attempting to enforce how they believe on one another.

FYI there is a religious ideology that attempts to create harmony as it's based on purely secular ideas and many of our Founding Fathers were members of either or both of it's component religions UNITARIAN UNIVERSALISTS. Of course! Just don't do it to anybody what you don't want to be done to you. Simple! And do whatever you want since is not harming anyone. This is basics of living in society. A very basic philosophy. You must be 10 years old or probably never read a book not to know that. No offense. But base moral on religion is insane because religion isn't always fair and usually aren't based on that simple philosophy. Just read any religion book and you'll notice that clearly. Actually bible has some subtle philosophy to make miserable people in all senses live better but aren't always fair with its statements. My tip! Read a book and put your brain to work. If you want to be a respected person and successful in your life be fair using your rationality to analyse situations. Not good or bad(only stupid losers act like that). And always face reality, everybody wants to believe their life are beautiful even if they don't have a good life. People actually Lie a Lot to themselfs.
This same people are called weak and losers and sure they'll probably never enjoy a good life and will pass their entire ones living in ilusions create by themselfs like god and other mainstream belifs to make people comfortable even being miserable in all senses.

Hope it helps. :)

Yes a system of morals can exist with out religion to an extent. If God never gave us the Bible or sent out any prophet, or Jesus to teach us morals. We would only us a certent amount of morals to judge what is right or wrong. God gave us a something to tell us the different between right, and wrong.

Morality should be based on respect for , understanding, and commitment to the many ways we have to care for each other. It's about improving the quality of life based on the natural rights of humans to live safe, secure, happy, fulfilling lives without in the process harming others or destroying the habitat conditions necessary to sustain all life on the planet. This involves more than just tolerance for each other. It involves a personal commitment to fulfill the obligation to act and think in manners that contribute to the improvement of the experiences of all sentient life on the planet. TWH 06272006

You are trying to re-invent the wheel. The separation between church and state is an old idea. It would be better to work for an increase in moral behavior based on what people already believe without trying to create a utopia based on theory.
;-D Focus on reality. Believe in miracles!

Well you see, God gave us a built in sense of morality, that's one of the proofs that we have been created in His image. When you try to divorce morals from the teachings of the Bible you put your foot on the edge of a very slippery slope because then you are operating from your own imperfect and finite human understanding that is prone to temptation and error.

That doesn't mean that you have to confine morality in the context of some particular religion or denomination. It just means that you have to submit your understanding to the eternal Word of God. Throughout history human morality has swung back and forth like a pendulum between a strict legalistic form of morality and a loose, liberal morality that turns grace into "dis-grace."

Jesus came to earth full of Grace AND Truth. He said that we should love God will all of our hearts, souls, mind, and strength, and our neighbor as ourselves. The Apostle Paul explained to the legalistic Jews how this worked in every day life.

"Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, "You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet," and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. Romans 13:8-10

sure it may. i guess you probably did not study Plato or any aspect else except the bible or inspite of garbage the different faith is depending upon, to assert that morality are available in straight forward words from the futility of blind faith. I dare you to teach what we as society owes in the present day to faith or what good has any faith performed by heritage. To depending morality in a delusion truly than consumer-friendly experience, reason and human journey is a fallacy and intensely stupid. I grant you with one party of how moral codes might want to be made: depending on the crimes and immoralities of religion incredibly christians of the middle a lengthy time period, it became determined in this great usa human beings that that is extra efficient to allow the Citizen chosen his/her personal non secular course than the imposition and immoralities of non secular despotism. How do i comprehend that homicide is undesirable with out region? this is extremely straight forward my chum: i do not favor to be homicide. purely because you won't be able to distinguish between animal instincts and mind washing it would not propose that each body else is your equivalent in stupidity.

I don't know if it could be systemic. Short of the rule of law. That has always been an upside of religions, the inherent guilt/fear that tends to keep people in line.

I have never been religious and I personally have as much or more of the important morals as any xtian i know, but that's because "momma raised me good".

So i guess I just argued to myself, that morals are intrinsic in one's character, but in order to have any semblance of universal morals, you would need a religion... but it's open to debate..

good question...

I believe that is called "Natural Law". Check out the philosophies of John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. They had some interesting theories on human nature and you may find what you're looking for there. For "quickie" synopsis, check out the link below.
