First off, never make the ad about YOU or YOUR business or products. Always make the ad about the customer and/or the benefits of using your services or buying from you.

This is true for all advertisements regardless of the media you're using.

Now, having said that...Are you using newspaper for the right reason? Certain media are better suited for specific outcomes. Ask yourself if this campaign is trying to generate immediate, short term results or long term, better results. If your answer is the latter, then newspaper is not the media you should be using.

If you still decide to use newspaper, buy the largest ad you can afford (1/4 page is almost a minimum) and try to create the ad so that it's "upsidedown" when compared to most other ads out there. Here's what I mean: Decide whatever it is that you are offering be it the price the quantity the percent off...etc.
Make that the most prominent part of your ad at the top of the space you have. (I.E. - 40% off all pavers!) Then below that have any disclaimers or specifics, and then down at the bottom and smaller, have your company name and contact info.

Granted, most businesses don't do this, but think about it. Is a reader likely to be moved by "JOE'S DISCOUNT PAVER MEGAPLEX" or to someone who's in the market for pavers "40% OFF ALL PAVERS". Think about it...

Feel free to contact me if you'd like anymore details....

If you are not getting any business, try your local cable company, I understand that you can get cheap air time late at night.
Or try using big bold fonts in your newspaper ad.

good luck
