Ever tried snaring them? I've done this before in the prairies of ND so this is no joke. Take a rope a make a loose knotted noose w/ about 15' of slack. Chase the gopher into the hole and place the snare over the hole. Squat on your knees. Wait patiently for the gopher to start to poke it's head out. Then when you see him, squat down further... do this until he comes out far enough that you can catch him in the snare. SNARE & WHACK (sounds bad but it's what you gotta do)
Hope it works for you! It has for me!!

Well pocket gophers are actually beneficial to soil in a lot of ways but if you really want to get rid of them there are some tips here -
http://www.ext.colostate.edu/PUBS/NATRES/06515.html
scroll down to "Damage and Control".
That page has a variety of methods and I consider the humane ones to be the best.
I have also heard that pinwheels work, it seems like the cheapest way so I would try a bunch of li'l pinwheels all over my yard/garden first.

wind mills.....put a whole lot of wind mills *the little plastic ones
in ur yard, the vibration of them spinning scares the gophers away. make sure u put like 5-10 of them 'all around' the yard.

Oh, saw this one being discussed on Gardening by the Yard with Paul James.

Basically you wanna use a granular form of castor oil, starting closest to your property, house, etc... and gradually working themn away from your property. Hey, everything I've heard from him has always worked best.
