I won't have much time . . . maybe only 4 to 8 hours . . . but would like to take a tour of the Grand Canyon (and other sites if possible). Any suggestions on the best short tour out of Las Vegas? Thanks!

I am not sure what tour options are available from Las Vegas, but be careful about what they call the 'Grand Canyon'.

The canyon itself is over 250 miles long, but the most beautiful and dramatic parts where the canyon is the widest, deepest, and has the most formations is the 40-50 mile stretch covered by the the National Park. To get to either the north or south rim of this part of the canyon is a 4-5 hour drive one way from Las Vegas.

I know that some 'Grand Canyon' tours out of Las Vegas take people to the extreme western edge of the canyon, just upstream from Lake Mead. This area has a very different topography from the central canyon and lacks the distinctive 'inner gorge'. This area is still pretty to be sure, but it is not the place you see in the postcards and picture books.

To visit the National Park area and see the true heart of the Grand Canyon would require at least a 10-12 hour round trip from Las Vegas.

Best tour that I took out of Vegas was a "hummer" tour driven by a local. Got picked up at the hotel, stopped at the Hoover Dam and a couple of other sites known to the locals, went to a reservation and was bussed the rest of the way to the south side rather than the north side. The south side is undeveloped, has no tourists traps, railings or anything else to take away from the view. Plan on a full 8 hours. To do it in 4 hours you may as well take the helicopter tour.

When you get there go to the bell captain and tell him what you want to do.We stayed a Treasure Island and they had real nice trips for the Grand Canyon. You will love it. It is awesome. One thing we a noticed was that when people got to the rim no one talked, your just to lost in what your seeing.Have a safe trip.
