NO COLD WATER! It must always be room temperature water. Cold water makes your vocal chords tense while room temperature water will moisten and expand them while keeping you hydrated.

When I'm doing a lot of auditioning - or before a show, I'll drink a lot of Throat Coat - I've grown to love the taste of it and even if its only psychological, it makes me feel better and therefore sing better.

Lemon is good. Lots of water to keep your mucus membranes thin. The warmth of tea is soothing, but avoid caffeine as it dehydrates you and hydration is really important. Also stay away from milk and other dairy.

I always drink hot tea before I sing. If I don't have any available....room temperature water works pretty well....I would avoid really cold water.

I've heard that a lot of professional signers swear by ginger tea...it's supposed to loosen up the vocal cords and reduce irritation.

Something like chocolate milk to coat the throat, then after a little while try something with lemons or lemon flavor.
