It's hard to understand something you didn't grow up in. In other words, music like country would relate to those that grew up in that and can relate. I myself have grown to appreciate country music. The same with jazz, blues, gospel etc.

You've already answered your own questions by saying "All musical genres express certain values and beliefs".

We can agree that some of the "values & beliefs" are suspect but they are none the less there as the artist see it.

May not be for you or the next person but it's an art form. I can't understand some African drum music but after it was explained to me what was going on, it made much more sense.

Now, I didn't run out and buy a bunch of the music but I can appreciate it a lot more.

I don't know about "values," but all I see is the belief that whats important in life is getting as many good-looking women as you can, having as much money as you can, acting like a "gangsta," and not taking any crap from anybody.

Many people live like this as a direct result of the music.

the values expressed in rap or hip hop is the same in any other type of music. we talk about what we know, i say we cause we rap, just like country or r&b they talk about love cause that's what they know a country artist don't know about living in the gettho or the hood. an r&b artist don't know about shootings and drive by's and a heavy metal artist don't know about selling drugs they talk about doing them though. there's a rap artist maned common he talks about the gettho but in a positive way he's from chicago so you can get a jest of the enviroment he was rised in. then there's other rappers that talk about shooting guns and selling drugs cause that's what they be around that's what they know so as far as value what type of value does country music got or folk-lore mucis has they just talk about love it would be nice if that's was the only thing to talk about but it ain't not in my eyes there's aot a messed up **** going on in this world and rappers ain't scared to talk about it. espically that dumb azz president we got rappers talk about him all the time

If were talking "gangsta rap", they dont have a single thoughtful bone in their body. But there is still some great Hip-hop artists out there who have style, soul, and actual positive messages.
