English bulldogs are awesome! Generally, larger dogs are more friendly and good with families, smaller dogs can have more high strung personalities. If you're starting with a puppy, remember that many puppies are nippers and exuberant when they are small. If you're getting a shelter dog, look for a dog that lived with small kids before. It's also important to make sure your child will respect the dog (not hit it, pull it's tail, or bother it when it is eating) and that the dog will not just be left alone with the child until it is trained. Good luck! =D

A Golden Retriever. They are great around children of all ages. They will be a great watch dog, barking if someone or something new is in the area, but rarely would one bite. My female Golden retriever jumped our fence to stand between my next door neighbor as she tried to spank her child. The dog did not growl or bare her teeth, she just worked her way in between the mother and child, to protect the child.

We have a Weimeraner-Chocolate Lab mix, and she is the most loving, adoring dog I've ever had. She weighs nearly 100 pounds, so we were nervous about what she would do with my great nieces and great nephews when they came by, but she was as gentle with them as I've ever seen her. I've heard that labs are known for being very good with kids.

Labradors are good with children, but there aren't many breeds that are bad with children, it depends on the training.

A mutt. A mutt is intelligent. We saved our dog from the dog pound and he is great with my kids and even strangers...but he protects us from perceived harms with a fervour unseen by me before. He is intelligent and loves all children. You may save a good dogs life by getting a mutt...keeping him or her from the pound.

I would have to say a mutt. I own a mutt and found her in a dumping area near my home. She had obviously been abused and dumped out there. She has had her problems but is so affectionate and eager to please. We love her and named her Lucky Dog.
