depends on the fineness of the sieve, because since water has a high amount of surface tension it can be put in a very fine sieve and not flow out of the holes whereas gasoline, having a very low amount of surface tension will flow through the holes. This is the same principle that gas/water separators in many engines work, the gas will flow through the screen but the water has a very hard time flowing through it and so it doesn't flow through it and stays in the tank.

Freeze it first. Ice would carry very well in a sieve, especially if the ambient temperature was below freezing.
