He was brought up American, in the original comics he was sent here at such a young age that krypton wasn't even a memory. Besides The writers of DC comics were all Americans trying to sell a comic in America during war time. What better way to sell comics than creating a slogan that rallied troops?

Because Superman was an imaginary character and the writer was an American. Since he, obviously, loved America, what other country would he have Superman defend? This is the greatest country on earth! We should all strive to keep it that way!
