It's the preparation from the chicken, to the rice and even down to the sauce. They are totally different other than they way they are served.

if we compare the roasted/fried version of the Chinese dish to the Malay one to make it slightly similar, the Chinese use 5 spice powder to flavour the chicken before it is fried while the Malays have a variety of secret spices and herbs, depending on the owner. The Chinese also have chicken that seems to retain it's juices better although I'm not sure if it's the way the chicken is slaughtered or is it just the method they use. Another thing is the way the chiken is chopped up. The Chinese usually cut the bone right through cleanly while the Malay version usually crushes the bone before it is choped.

The rice made by the Chinese would be fried with ginger, garlic and cooked in the broth that the chickens have been boiled in. While the Malay rice is usually plain, though some have started using chicken broth as well. This would basically make the Malay rice much healthier but it's obviously less tasty. Because the rice has been fried in oil, the Chinese version had seperate grains compared to the Malay one. The oil also helps make the rice feel less mushy even though it might be slightly overdone.

thay have different chilli sauces and this is where we can't really compare. Malays tend to like their stuff sweeter and therefore they have a slightly sweeter chilli sauce. The Chinese one has been made to compliment the dish by re-using the same ingredients that has been added to the rice.

I don't think that the Malay version is doing quite so well compared to the Chinese when you see that they have the Chinese chicken rice being sold by Chinese in a Halal foodcourt like Banquet.

I think it's in the details observed in preparing Chinese chicken rice right down from the soup to the chilli sauce to the cucumber pickle to the rice to the chicken itself.

Chinese have a special way of retaining the moisture and taste of the chicken while at the same time producing a smooth texture. I think there's actually a special method of steaming the chicken and then soaking it in iced chicken broth once cooked.

And for the rice, not only is it fried with garlic, ginger and shallots (varying recipes), but also cooked in chicken broth, and sometimes pandan leaves are also added, to obtain its fragrance and tastiness. Plus of course, you must use good quality rice

And we know that the soup, the chilli sauce and the cucumber pickle is essential in creating a good plate of chicken rice. For me, chicken rice without the chilli sauce and cucumber pickle is not proper chicken rice, and is best eaten with salted vegetable soup (maybe it's just me!).

For me (no offense!), Malay chicken rice doesn't attend to all these details. It's rice is not as fragrant, it's chicken is often dry and usually only accompanied by slices of cucumber.

But I guess at the end of the day, everyone has their personal preferences, and maybe if we look hard enough, there are actually some good Malay chicken rice out there.

Well, in my opinion, Malays produce much tastier and better Nasi Lemak. So maybe it's a case of being able to cook one's own cuisine better?

Chinese chicken rice is moister (is there such a word?). Malay chicken rice is drier but not as oily. Chicken wise, I prefer hainanese version. Chili, I prefer the Malay version as it doesn't have the strong vinegar taste plus it's hotter. But some malay stalls make a kickass tasting rice and some chinese stalls make a kickass tasting chilli. At the end of the day, it's up to personal choice.

I guess the Chinese way is more thorough and more methods, like using ice water to cool down the cooking process of the chicken once it is taken out from the boiling water. There's always many version between races. Try asking a Chinese or Malay making Indian Thosai or Prata? Do they taste the diff?

Probably because you like the taste of Chinese chicken rice better. After all, they are cooked very differently. In the Chinese version, the rice is cooked in chicken broth. In the Malay version, the rice is usually fried. And the chicken is prepared differently too.

I don't think it's fair to compare them together. Just eat what you like. For me, I like them both.
