its an old tradition the players used to recieve a cap for each time they played for there country.so basically played 50 you get 50 caps,though now metothorical.

any player that appears in an international wins a 'cap it dates back to the early English amateurs who were awarded a silk hat for playing foreign opposition. i think england still do give players a cap.
