Younger drummers tend to need a firm grip on the sticks to start with. Try a 5B first, without nylon tips. (By the way, young drummers will be taking chunks out of the sticks from the get-go. Might not be a bad idea to start with a generic, less expensive stick than Zildjian.)

As the drummer's hand muscles mature, he can choose a more nimble stick, like a nylon tipped 6A.

Try Zildjian RAW (Wood) 5a. Gives u much better grip. Can even try Zildjian DIP if u have enough money to buy u a next pair :)

Well, the brand name is not so important as the size. There are a number of standardized sizes among drumsticks, depending on what kind of drumming you intend to do.

I think the best beginner drum stick size is the 2B. It's heavier than a 5A. This helps the beginning drummer learn implement control. Once your fine motor skills have been honed, then a smaller stick is perfectly appropriate.

It is also important to consider what kind of drumming you'll be doing. If it's beginner's band, then I would stick with a 2B until told otherwise. If you're starting out on drum set (which I discourage until you master the 26 basic rudiments), then a 5A is appropriate.
