I lot of the reasons why the Scots hate the English can simply be put down to historical ignorance and stupidity. Unforutnately, a lot of Scots rely on Braveheart for the basis to their racist attitudes, which is historically incorrect, poorly acted and offensive.
Before the Norman conquest, the Scots and the English (Anglo-Saxons) were fairly well behaved neighbours. Both were invaders in Brittania. Don't let the Scots tell you any different - they too invaded Britain and removed (absorbed) the native Picts, just as the English did with the Welsh.
The Scots and Anglo-Saxons did clash occasionally, mainly because the Scots were trying to invade England and the English were trying to do the same in lowland Scotland.
It is with the Norman conquest that things changed. Unfortunately, the Scots tried to invade again and got a right kicking. And that's how it went from then on. Okay, the Scots won a couple of battles, which they rant on and on about more that than the English waffle on about 1966, but mainly they just got the c**p kicked out of them.
Culloden was actually Scots v Scots - although most silly Scots blame the English for that. Don't forget it was a Scot who introduced and forced through the union between Scotland and England. And if you look at some of the most fervent imperialists in the history of the British Empire you'll find they're... that's right - Scots!
While most Scots like to fantasize that they are a peace loving, harmonious people, they were just as warlike and greedy as any other nation. It's just when push came to shove they got shoved.
They hate the English for one reason and one reason only - when it came to grazing rights they came second best.
Don't be fooled, through history the Scots have murdered plenty of Englishmen, women and children just as the English did to the Scots. But ultimately, the Scots lost and the English won. If it were the other way round we would be the racists, burning flags and beating up kids.
I have a lot of Scottish friends and they are appalled at the racists events going on over the border. Racism is a real problem in Scotland today. We just have to rise above it.

Scottish people do not hate the English. To be honest we really couldn't give a ****. The English are just arrogant enough to think that we all have nothing better to do than sit about hating them all the time. get over yourself you racist ****.
Oh and all this about the so called beating of a boy wearing an England top. As if England are so innocent! I wonder how many Scots or welsh have been assaulted in similar situations in their country. Funny how these crimes are not plastered all over the news too. No grown man would punch a small child for no reason so I recon there's more to it! And fyi it was children who bullied him NOT a grown man! Lots of Scottish kids are bullied at English schools - I know this as I used to be one of them!!!!
If we hat the English so much then why do lots of English people choose to come and live in Scotland instead of their own country? It can't be the weather?????

I hate what happened to that little boy and i think it is very sad that you are not safe to walk down the streets wearing what ever football colours you wish. I am Scottish and i do not hate the English, i do have a lot of very good English Friends and have actually holidayed down south. I also feel a lot of the English hate the Scots and in fact asked a similar question to your a few days ago. I think it is a minority of people that is causing all the trouble between us and feel that it is about time it stopped and we all got on with each other after all life is short and we all need Friends, we all have similar problems so why cant we help each other and love each other. From a Scot, good luck in the world cup England x

It's just like the Eurovision Song Contest - political and/or steeped in history.
For all the wrongs that were done by english ancestors to Scottish, Welsh and Irish ancestors the current generations suffer. Some people will never let history be what it is: HISTORY.
I am not agreeing or disagreeing with history but the fact is: I wasn't there, I don't know what REALLY happened and so I want to live my life and make my own history.
That said I am english by birth, living in Scotland and have found only the odd few that have been hostile as soon as they hear me speak.
Like so many other things though, you only hear about the bad things, never the good.

Speaking as a scot, I dont think there is actual hatred of the English ( but there are some exceptions) No I think the real hatred is of the English Media, they so make you all out to be a bunch of tossers. The attack on the wee lad, was just shameful, though his parents might have thought a little harder about letting him play in that park in Aberdeen in an English top (though quite frankly where he was attacked it wouldnt have mattered alot what he was wearing). I will admit however to a smile when some dick head got the s**t kicked out of him when he got drunk in Glasgow east end and started singing 3 lions

History is history, I'm sure if we looked in our history books as everyone suggests there would be plenty of people out to get us English.
If I ever need to fly a flag it will not be the union flag but the English Flag.
Only the English have ever acknowledged the union flag, and this is why most other countries including Wales and Scotland think the union flag is the English flag.
England forever, everybody leave us alone, if we held grudges like others, then what a world it would be.

The fully grown Scottish man was fully grown in stature only. May he spend a good long time in jail for a really nasty crime.
I'm Scottish. I don't hate the English. I hate racism, no matter who puts it about. I think the fact that many Scots turn a deaf ear to racism against the English is a disgrace. Likewise sectarianism
There are lots of kind of prejudice, and I hate all of them. Some English people are also guilty of racism, but then so are some French, some Poles, some Tansanians, some Armenians, etc etc etc. We Scots should clean up the sh1t in our own yard.
And FOR FCUK'S SAKE HISTORY IS NO FCUKING EXCUSE!!! Can we PLEASE grow out of that?! Jeeeesus, geez peace.

Well, look at the history involved. The English tried (& succeeded to an extent) to control the other nations in the British Isles. My history on this subject is foggy, but I know they basically treated the Scotish, Welsh, and Irish like we treated the American Indians or the African slaves. They believed their culture & government was superior & that they needed to control these other "inferior" groups. Look up the potato famines in Ireland.

It all goes back to history when England was like America, invading and taking control of countries that were not theirs. Scotland, Wales and Ireland fell into the same trap. This is the main reason why they are hated so much. Although this reason does not justify what happened to that boy! Football has created hatred even further just about when things turning good.

I had a Scottish friend at school, but as we got older she got more proud and anti-English. It quite upset me - I didn't understand. They don't teach you much about it at school - watching Braveheart taught me more...and I cried!
I can't see the point in these old grudges. can't say I hate any one nation - only individuals. It seems stupid to hate people because of where they are born and stuff that happened generations ago - and we're probably all closely related anyway. Stupid, stupid, stupid!
And football doesn't count - most of it is friendly rivalry and banter....well the stuff from the semi- sensible people is anyway..... when it gets abusive it's just over-excited racist pricks finding any excuse to vent their anger.
So...tell me why people hate the English for things their ancestors did, because I don't bloody know either!
