Since people don't tend to know faces outside their country as well as inside their country, I'd have to pick one of China's past or present rulers since China has the biggest population, albeit not the most modern, informed society. The dictatorial regimes tend to spread the photographs of their dictators around the country and in the school books to indoctrinate the population about who's the boss. Examples were Saddam Hussein, Stalin and Hitler's photographs.

Oprah Winfrey! People all over the world know who she is and she is an inspiration to so many people. She is also very influential, any product she has on her shows, people go out and buy it!
I would also say Jesus, people always recognize pictures of Jesus, whether they believe in him or not!

Globally, I bet Buddha is most recognized. If you want someone that is part of the modern world, I bet George W. Bush would be a candidate...at least whenever you see news coverage of protests in foreign countries, they always have his picture on a poster...and it is usually on fire.
