Lanisoh - it is made from lanolin, and is very pure, so you can breastfeed with it on. It is made specifically for breastfeeding. It is so wonderful. It costs about $8-10 for a tube; the box is purple. It is sold in the baby section of stores, with the bottles and pacifiers. The one tube will last forever. A little dab goes a long way and you will feel so much better. Best of luck to you!

Also, if it is extremely painful, you can use a nipple shield. Be advised, however, they aren't recommended for extended periods because it cuts down on nipple stimulation (aahh) and therefore milk production (bummer). But I did have to use one for a few weeks. The Lanisoh was wonderful, though. My mother uses Bag Balm (for cows) on her feet, and that stuff is pretty good, too.

Continue breast-feeding even if nipples are sore or cracked. Try to feed the baby from the less painful nipple first so that it does not hurt too much during feeding. By the time you have finished, the milk may start to drain from the other side and breasts will become soft, allowing the baby to feed without suckling too hard. Express milk from your breasts to take tension away and prevent aggressive and painful suckling by the hungry baby. Remember, pain can be reduced and healing promoted by paying attention to the way you breast-feed. Make sure that the areola is in the baby’s mouth so that the baby cannot bite or chew at the nipples. Change your position every time you feed the baby so that the baby does not suckle at the nipple continuously in one position and make it sorer. Feed the child in such a position that the child is unable to pull the nipple. Do not remove the crusts of dried milk from a sore or a cracked nipple since this can worsen the situation. Occasionally blood oozing from the sore or cracked nipples may be swallowed by the baby, but it will not harm in baby in any way. If the problem is very severe then consult the doctor, who may suggest exposure to a sun-lump and application of an antiseptic cream. Exposure of nipples to air for some time every day would help in the healing process.

The treatment of a fissure is the same as for a cracked or a sore nipple. Remember, the fissure may be considered more painful and you may have to use a nipple shield when you resume the baby on a breast-feed. Make sure that the nipple shield is clean.

Don't stop breastfeeding. It's the best thing you can do for your little one. Pumping won't make the dryness any better, since you're still placing stress on the affected area. And don't use an ointment like Vaseline, which is petroleum-based. Use a lanolin salve. The most common brand is Lanisoh, but your pharmacist or doctor may know of a 'generic' brand that will work just as well. Apply it at least once a day to dry breasts, even when they're not dry, to prevent this from happening.

As I mentioned before, do not stop breastfeeding. You need to keep those milk ducts open, or you will have bigger problems on your hands than dry skin. Be sure to pat (not rub) yourself dry after each feeding, and be sure that your bras are supportive, but not too tight.

I know it hurts, but get that lanolin on and you'll feel better soon. And you'll be happy that you kept breastfeeding your little one. That time is priceless.

Bag Balm. No...this isn't a joke or being rotten. The stuff is great and works beautifully. It comes in a green tin. It is however abit greasier than most jellys or lotions but it works wonders.

If you can't get it in the store (any WalMart should have it) then search out The Vermont Country Store on line. You'll find it there.

Good luck...and ouch. I sympathize.

I have been told that grated carrot works wonders, though I never got to try this as know one told me until after I had finished breastfeeding. I can't see why it would not work as cabbage leaves help with mastitis and drying up the milk production.
