Stay away from milk and other acid producers. Milk will relieve it temporarily but in the long run will do more damage. Make a note of which foods bother you most and stay away from them and do not allow yourself to get too hungry. An entirely empty stomach can also cause heartburn - so always have some crackers available. Drink lots of water.
Tums are a good source of calcium so it's not too bad for you to be taking anyway. But if it persists, ask your doctor about taking Zantac. It is safe for pregnancy and breastfeeding and it is OTC.

Milk does NOT help, it actually worsens the situation! I have heard though that a small amount of rice milk can help.

Funny, I have the same problem but I've never been pregnant!
I find that Pepcid Complete helps the best, but do not take it regularly, only when you need it.
Avoiding acidic foods, like tomato products, peppers, onions, garlic, etc., helps a little. Chew your food completely, and let you stomach empty out before eating again or lying down. I find avoiding soda or carbonated drinks also helps.

Also make sure you drink lots of water thoughout the day. If you don't like plain water, buy a bottle of lemon juice and add a little to a glass of water.
