I am trying to get some thoughts/insight for an essay. Any comments would be helpful!

i do not think the eu is ANY type of a threat to the united states. they cannot and will not come together as a union for no state wants to give up even the tiniest bit of sovereignty. for instance, the germans accuse the polish of coming over and undermining their electricians and their industry because they will work cheaper thus creating a prejudice and a sort of new class of labor. Britain refuses to use the euro though they are a member. france and germany continue to have meetings with each other leaving the smaller states out so they can decide the future of the eu. hmmm, does not sound like a UNITED europe to me. they will not work together, they cannot even decide on a constitution because no state is willing to give up power. they see it as a sign of weakness rather than strength to unify. the eu countries refuse to follow eu rules unless it gives them some advantage over the other countries. they have existed as many small nations for too long for the eu to ever work. and we all know france wants to rule the world again, become the new world hegemon.

sorry, in answer to your question. europe has socialist tendencies. france cannot compete because something like 35- 70% of their work force is state run (government jobs, but check the statistic for it is high and i am not sure i am exact). other states, germany and france again will not give up their fat pay and work longer hours. that whole thing last year in france with protests was to try and get unemployment down, but they refused to give up the perks of not being able to be fired and 35 hour work week. with impositions like that employers are not going to easily hire new people for if they do not do their jobs, they cannot be fired. china and other such countries practically own manufacturing now. i think eu and the us are pretty much at a disadvantage when it comes to that area. there are just so many factors to take into consideration. heck, calif and france are ranked practically the same in the worlds economy. they compete for 7th place in the world, where britian is 4th.

a good topic for an essay! with a little research, you can come up with some good stuff. well, that also depends on if your teacher is a liberal or not. if so, they will probably get mad if you criticize europe. all libs love europe and want the us to become like europe watch out. the things i pointed out are easily found on the web for works cited, if you need scholarly resources.
