okay. it's an eMachine. the light around the power button is on, but the computer itself wont turn on, no matter how many times ive punched the button or held it down. the orange light that flickers on the machine itself isnt there. there is a faint, high pitched sound and i think its either the optical drive or the thing trying to turn on. but i have no idea! please help!

Is there anything on the monitor when you turn it on or is it just completely black?
It could be a number of things. It could be your fan or your connection or maybe your RAM is damaged. Normally if your hard drive or memory dies, you would not be able to turn the computer on at all or you get a message on your monitor saying an error occurred trying to read your drive.
I have an emachine too, I usually do my own fixes, but I would open the motherboard up and watch what the circuits are doing when you try to turn it on. If you had a short circuit from a power outage and you dont have a surge protector, then its possible it damaged your hard drive or your memory.
EDIT: Yes, 4 years is usually the lifetime of a desktop computer, especially an emachine. You will have to take it to the technician and figure out whats wrong with it because I read the other DETAILS and it sounds like your hard drive has fried or some part of your motherboard has been damaged. You will need to install a new hard drive. Normally when your hard drive gets fried, the data is not retrievable. A technician can tell you whether or not they can save the data, but it will cost you A LOT trying to recover all your data from your hard drive. You should always backup any important data every few months to a CD-RW in case this stuff happens. A computers lifetime is very random, but 4 years is usually when something goes wrong.

It sounds to me like you have one of two problems, either your Power supply has fried (A high pitched sound coming from the PS is typical when a power supply has had it, try looking to see if the exhaust fan is turning when you try to turn it on, its right by where you plug the power cord into, if it does not turn, then its a dead power supply)
OR you may have a mother board problem, if it was your Hard drive that was the problem, then more than often, your bios would recognize this and you would get an error stating something like "No operating system found" or "HDD 0 error", or "No boot device found"
Hope this helps.

How did you manage to send this message--without a computer??Do you have 2 or something??Try another power source first. If you have a surge protection board, try bypassing that.its a process of eliminating things ,then it comes down to a short in the computer start button etc--What on earth is an E machine--at least you gave that info-as most people dont and its very hard to answer a question when you dont know what someone is using.

I'm not sure what you mean by "faint high pitched sound." What is the location? Is it coming from the computer speaker? If so, it could mean that your video card has become unseated. In your eMachines instruction manual there should be a description of all of the possible system beeps.

Are you sure there is no Floppy Disk in the machine?!!
Take the disk out of the A drive and try again.
Also make sure none of your keys on your keyboard are down or that nothing is pressing it and lastly make sure the buttons on your mouse is not clicked down.

is it a laptop? or desktop. try unplugging and waiting a few minutes .sounds like the machine is hibernating. try holding the power button down for 5 seconds and see what happens. good luck. if it's a 5300 series laptop, they recalled all those for heat problems, there was a class action suit filed and settled on those. if it is a 5300 sries, email me for info.
