wrestling has had a lot to do with pop culture. beginning with gorgeous george in the 50s. after that, it really died down, especially when vietnam came, but the rest of the world died out to. in the 80s, hulk hogan came along and american fell in love with him. he enspired millions and no matter what people say, if you lived in the 80s, you probably watching wrestling occasionally as saturday nights main event on nbc was getting better ratings than nfl football or snl. not to mention the record breaking crowd at the silverdome in 87 which still holds the record for largest indoor event in the history of the world. steve austin came along in the late 90s and wrestling had its third (but not final) boom. the terms "suck it", "can of whoop ***" and other sayings came from pro wrestling and america began using them on the street, music and in film. so, i would say pro wrestling has had a big influence on pop culture.

It is simply entertainment and its impact on society is nearly zero except for those poor individuals who take it seriously. Such people live in a world of make-believe, but this can occur from any type of entertainment. Pro wrestling has no significance.
I remember Gorgeous George, Argentina Rocka, and others of the period of the 1950s. I also knew some of these people personally, such as the Sheik of Arabia (1960s), I worked with his younger brother and his second oldest brother’s wife baby sat my children and I did some work in his oldest brother's store. They really think their fans are idiots.
