cubic centimeters, the size of the combustion chamber x the number of cylinders

The combustion chamber is the area where compression and combustion take place. As the piston moves up and down, you can see that the size of the combustion chamber changes. It has some maximum volume as well as a minimum volume. The difference between the maximum and minimum is called the displacement and is measured in liters or CCs (Cubic Centimeters, where 1,000 cubic centimeters equals a liter). A motorcycle might have a 500 cc or a 750 cc engine.

Hi There,

In the classic sense, "CC" is "Cubic Centimeter". This is simply the metric equivalent to "Cubic Inches".

In most metric bikes (i.e. Suzuki, Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha etc.) the engine size is displayed as "CC". For example, I own a Kawasaki Vulcan Nomad. It is 1600cc. The 1600cc is equivalent to 95 cubic inches. A Harley Davidson displays their bikes in terms of cubic inches because it is an "American" bike. Their 88 cubic inch engine would be the same as approximately 1470cc.

That's the simplest way to explain "cc" vs "cubic inches" that I know of.

Most countries use the Metric System to measure with. So, most Bikes being Foreign are in Metric measurements. Cubic Centimeters (CC) is how they measure the Piston Cylinders. Older Harley Davidson Motorcycles may be in Cubic Inches (CI), not sure of the newer ones. Think of the American cars/trucks. As America converts to the metric system we are now seeing car engines stated more in Liters instead of Cubic Inches. A 350 cubic inch engine is now a 5.7 liter.

CC means the Cubic Centimetres, which define the size of the engine. The formula to calculate the CC of any engine is:
No. of cylinders*(Bore/2)^2*(22/7)*Stroke.
Where Bore= Diameter of cylinder, Stroke=Length the piston runs in the cylinder.

It basically defines the Engine capacity and consequently the torque&power characteristics....

its cubic centimeters or cc for short
it can be defined as the capacity of the engine, 1000cc=1litre
say u have a bike or car of 1500cc that means 1.5litres, the
amount of the fuel which can enter the engine is 1.5litres
at a time. so the higher the capacity of the engine , more is
its power and less is its milage.
