After the plot of the building is excavated to the depth at which the ground floor will be located, piles (large steel cylinders that can be as thick as 3 feet), which are engineered based on the loads around the building, are driven many feet into the ground variously all around the plot of the building. They are then topped off with a concrete pile "cap", that reaches the surface of the ground. The cap contains steel reinforcement (rebar) tied into the pile and some sticking out of the top to be tied into the rebar of the concrete reinforced ground floor slab.

Steel pilings are driven into the ground, down to the bedrock. This forms the basis for the building foundation.
