I use the word improvement only because these advanced property rights and therefore independence albeit only for the elite.

err...more slavery and war??! ...But there again as we become more 'civilised' i think it may just be possible that one day say in the year 3000AD we will all get along just fine :)

If the improvement was only for the elite, I would not say 'society' was improved at all. Western civilization is dying...the third world is on the rise; we will now be the subjects of revenge.
