a penalty kick is awarded when a foul is committed by the defensive team within the penalty box (18 yard box) that would normally be punishable by a direct free kick (this means kicking, pushing, holding etc.). any player on the team can take the kick but the fouled player usually does. you can tell a penalty kick is being awarded because the referee Will blow the whistle and point down to the penalty spot (where the kick is taken from).

Whenever someone commits a penalty inside the big box in front of the goal, they award a penalty kick. The person who was fouled is the one who takes the kick, and will usually score

If a player from one side coomits a foul in his side's 'D' or the big box in front of his goal, then the player fouled is awarded a penalty. The penalty is taken from inside the 'D' approximately 9 yards from the appropriate goal baseline.

A foul or handball must take place inside the box, if the referee sees and agrees it was a foul and not a dive a penalty will be awarded.
