How soon after the cesarian?

Basically, the mother should have clear soups, jelly, and lots of water (even chewing gum helps) until she passes wind or has a bowel movement.

After that, she should eat whatever she likes in small amounts quite often. Many women find that it is easier on their fragile systems to eat six small meals a day rather than three larger ones. She should also be given lots of water and juices to drink. Especially grape, currant or berry juices that contain iron to replace blood lost during the birth.

She will have to watch how the baby responds to what she has eaten too. Everything she eats eventually affects her milk, so many women find they must avoid gassy foods like cabbage and broccoli.
