Galen was a Greek born about 200 aD, he was the greatest physician of his time and so much emphasis was placed on his work that no new medical discoveries were focused on for about 1000+ years. He studied in Alexandria, but because operations were not commonplace at that time he used animals for much of his knowledge of internal organs. This gave medical science an inaccurate portrayal of the body that was not corrected until the Middle Ages/Renaissance period. The History Channel had a fascinating piece on him. I would also check Wikipedia, I'm sure they have a good description.

Galen, was an ancient Greek physician. His views dominated European medicine for over a thousand years.
Galen was born in Pergamum (modern-day Bergama, Turkey), the son of Nicon, a wealthy architect. His interests were eclectic - agriculture, architecture, astronomy, astrology, philosophy — until he finally concentrated on medicine.
