I don't think that I would have given a penalty kick if I were the referee. I think 7 or 8 in 10 refs would have allowed the game to continue for a few more seconds until the final whistle. And I think that Australia would have won in extra-time.
The ref didn't get a good look at the assumed foul. The Italian fell because he stumbled upon the Aussie player that was on the ground after going for the ball. It was the Italian's fault, because he didn't watch his steps. And the ref misjudged the "ghost tackle".

I am not Australian

That penalty was ****** bullshit.
Every1 in Australia agrees that the socceroos have done us proud throughout the cup, but we've been robbed. It was a clear dive by Grosso, typical wog act. Italy had two match winners on the day Buffon and the ref.
But something like this was always going to happen because the standard of refereeing during the tournament has been nothing short of ****** disgraceful.
The **** will hit the fan when a poor decision knocks out a big team like England or Brazil.

Man...this is such a joke! Where were you when the Italians got the red card? No way was a red card deserved there. But, the Italian defense suffocated the Aussies. Now when they were in the box, Lucas Neill slid in front of Grosso. WHY ON EARTH would Neill go down on the ground in the box. Stupid, stupid move! Any contact would have looked deliberate by going down in the box. The referee made the right call. And because it happened in the box...it's an automatic penalty kick. You are just crying sour grapes now. Get over it! Forza Italia!

The same as 85% of the world. Totally heartbreaking for the boys and not at all warranted. The point will be argued strongly by Italian supporters but on the whole the world has spoken. I'm sure in time that will be a source of comfort for the boys to know they had so much support in this decision from nations around the world and they will greatly appreciate that. They are a great bunch of guys and need some time to accept being ejected in such an unfair manner. Poor Lucas Neill, my heart is totally torn apart for him. One of the fairest and hard playing players of the game.

Try to held World Cup in your own country, and you can do whatever you want. Pay the refs, maybe able. Ask the Correan, how they do it in 2002!!

The reff was absolutely right, red card and penalty equally the same.
C'mon man, will the game be attractive if the quarter final ' only just' playing Australia vs Ukraine?? Bloody No!! Nobody want to watch it, except Australian them self.

Italy got extremely lucky by winning that penalty on the very last second of the match! And If you watched closely to the video replay, that wasn't a penalty!!!

Everyone will always argue against it when it is not their own team winning. If the tables were turned, Australia would be partying and not arguing about what they did to the Italians being unfair. Nobody likes to lose...it sucks...but there can only be one winner. Materazzi got the red card which was also unfair, so did Australia argue against that?...of course not.

2 words for FIFA - INSTANT REPLAY.
yeah it's not traditional, but with the aggresive style of play nowadays, 1 ref cannot see everything on the pitch. it will be strange at 1st but has been a success in American football

I think there are more Italians to fill up the stadiums than Aussies, so it's convenient that Italy goes on.
