I loved that movie, it had the perfect ending for what kind of movie it was. It wasn't supposed to be this shocking, horror movie. What didn't you understand about the ending? Ivy is the only villager besides the elder who knows the monsters aren't real, but when she's in the woods she's attacked by one (even though it's really Adrien Brody dressed up, playing with her) and she kills him, thus she goes back to believing they're real. She gets the meds and we assume Lucius will be cured. It's kind of like being conditioned to fear things by our superiors so as to "protect us."

Okay, SPOILERS! for those who are reading and haven't watched the whole thing ....
.....

So, basically, this group of folks have all lost someone they love to a violent crime, right? They are all clients in a grief counseling group, where they meet and hear each others' stories. One of them (William Hurt's character) is an American History prof at U. of Pennsylvania. He suggests that they can all be safe from loss or violence if they move into the woods, build an 1890's type of village, and live in a "kinder, gentler" era. They (the original group that met at the counseling center) end up having their kids there and apparently living in that village for a couple of decades at least (given the apparent ages of the kids). The whole time they live there, the "elders" have this mission to basically keep their kids away from the truth of the life they're living. They swear that none of their kids will ever know about the fact they really live in the 1990's -- not the 1890's. This is all done out of fear of losing anyone else that they love to the violence of the "real world." They create this story that there are creatures in the woods in order to keep their kids away. They figure if they all live this way forever, they'll never lose anyone to violence again. They make the woods forbidden, they make up these "creature costumes" and create scary screams coming from the woods, etc. all to create this illusion for the kids. Finally, when Lucius is hurt, it's only Ivy who can go into the woods and the town that's beyond -- because she's the one who loves Lucius, and also because she's blind and will not get the facts of the lie they've been living all their lives.
Have you seen "The Truman Show"? It's kind of along those lines in some ways.

The realization of what the ending probably was hit me about half way through the movie. I spent the second half of the movie hoping and praying that I was wrong because it seemed a little too obvious. Sadly, I was correct. : ( The best part of the movie was the female sitting near me saying "I paid money for this sh*t!?"
I hope Shamalamadingdong brought his 'A' game with Lady In The Water.

Duh!
The most scary thing in the world is choosing ignorance and spreading it that is the message.
I love Shamylan (Sp?) I had to watch "The Sixth Sense" twice before I got it. I thought "Signs" was interesting and Joaquin Phoenix was great in it. I'm eagerly awaiting "Lady in the Water"
All things Shamylan are not absolute; I hated "Unbreakable"

Hmm I knew the ending to the film even from just watching it from the trailers. Although they could had added a better twist to it. Like the place being invated from the outside world or something.

I figured it out half way through the movie. That's the joy of Night Shamalyan's movies, climbing inside his brain. His mind is incredible.

I think it was awesome. The whole time we thought we were watching a movie set in the past and it turns out it was set in this century. Very clever....
