Don't they give talks in schools anymore? I am amazed at all these questions. Surely some of you have mothers or sisters or aunts you can ask.

i think it's rude the way some of these people have answered this question.
A period is the term used to denote the end of the menstral cycle. every twenty eight days the womans body builds up blood in her uterus in preperation to become pregnant, and an egg is released. if the egg is not fertilized by a sperm from a man, then the egg disentigrates, and the lining of blood and nutrients sheds from the uterus and flows out through the vagina. the bloodflow typically lasts between four and eight days, every twenty eight days or so. its different for every girl, and when you are just starting to have your period (between 11 and 14 normally) the flow can be very sporatic, you can go one month and have a period that lasts almost two weeks, and then go a month and a half before you have another one, until your body falls into its proper cycle.
some never do. i didnt get onto a set cycle until i started taking birth control at 18. before that it was ...roughly every month, for anywhere between 7-10 days.

Let me guess. You are a n11yr-old male. A period is when once a month (or so, depending on the woman) the woman's uterus flushes it's lining because it doesn't need it because she isn't pregnant. It comes out of her body the only way it can. It usually is uncomfortable and in general, woman don't enjoy it at all. (Neither do men ;) )

its called a menstrual cycle. it when the egg doesn't get fertilized by sperm in the uterus. so it causes woman to bleed every month. when you start getting your period that means your body is ready to start having babies, but you better be married and of age first. so keep your virginity as long as you can.

It is the time of the month when a girls uterus sheds. That is what a period is.

How old are you? You should ask your parents or another adult you trust to explain periods to you.
