So on one hand you are saying that your child cannot control himself but on the other hand you think he should be punished by the school more strictly for something that he cannot control. I don't see how a delayed punishment will do anything to teach your son. In fact I imagine it will backfire and make things worse. Dealing with it at the time it occurs would be best. I'm not sure what you mean by a "red light" but I would expect them to take your child away from whatever the kids were doing and tell him how we don't hit. Have him sit out for a while or for the whole class if necessary. I don't see what detention is going to do except upset his structure even more which very well may cause him to act out more.
