You can´t - you must know somebody who has Gmail account and who already has a link "Invite 5 friends to Gmail" inside of it. Gmail soon will be open to everybody to sign up, but in meantime you need to seek for people who give away invitations

for getting Gmail account you must be invited by a current Gmail user who has a Gmail account you can't join iit by simply registering
