Significant shrinking like this (as in several centimetres over a few years) may well be due to osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis can occur in anybody, but certain factors add together to increase the risk of a person developing it.
If you already have a fracture or bone collapse, then this will point towards the possibility of osteoporosis. Other factors which may alert the doctor to the possibility as well as loss of height include menopause and back pain. If you fall into one or more of these groups you may be at greater risk of osteoporosis:
Female, menopause before the age of 45, low sex hormone levels (this can be associated with excessive weight loss, as in anorexia nervosa), smoking, high alcohol intake, physical inactivity or bed rest, family history of osteoporosis.
If you think this might apply to you, see your doctor as soon as you can and ask him to arrange a bone density scan. Osteoporosis is incurable but treatable, however it needs to be properly diagnosed.

......perhaps the last time you were measured you were standing on a matchstick or a bottle top of some description..... or you had a tack in the sole of your shoe.........its all possible. But there again perhaps you`ve had a "close shave" of some kind while out walking........or maybe you`ve always been 5`4.5 but have been looking at yourself through one of those mirrors you find at the Circus and measured your reflection?????

happens when people get older.
you're taller when you wake cos your cartlidge between joints and back is rested and spread.
Or you could have problems with the joining tissue of the bones.
