To become a doctor, you must travel a bit in years. lol
1. You must take 4 years in college. This can be cut down but of course you must achieve all the credit hours and classes required to get your degree in science. You will have to major in pre-med usually but you can major in chemistry, and biology and still be able to get into medical school.

2. Getting into medical school. All medical schools in the United States requires you to take the MCAT, but there are some that dont outside of the US.

3. Medical school is a 4 year program no matter what field you are going into. The first two years are known as basic science. This is where the book work it. You take all the classes and read, read, read all you can to prepare yourself in taking the state licensure exam (USMLE) at the end of the two years. The other two years is called Clinical (s) (rotation). This is where you will learn all you can about the medicine via interaction with patients, the disease, other doctors, etc.. After this later 2 years you are a M.D. (medical doctor) but considered still a "student doctor".

4. Take the second part of the Licensure exam (3 step process)

5. Residency....This is 3-6 year program which depends on the field you choose to practice in. The more surgery you have to do, the more time you will spend in residency practicing in that field. You will get paid beign a residency and that is when life really begins, because you are a "Doctor". Just dont have your own practice or office yet.

6. Take the 3rd and last step of licensure exam.. Start looking for a place to set up office.

Its a great field with many rewards and of course downfalls like with anything else.
