usually they sit down with their manager and choose what they think will be a good "marketable" name.
although some new players come on scene with no nickname,so the commentator will make one up!
i would imagine the more stupid names have come from commentators,cos as you've probably noticed,most darts commentators talk total bollocks!!
i wish somebody would teach that idiot sid waddell to speak english!he's about as politically correct as wearing a nazi fancy dress to a jewish wedding!

they are given their nicknames either by there agents or their fellow darts players .cheers

the players all choose their own nicknames. it has nothing to do with the governing bodies, if they had their way all names would be long and laborious

at time of registration you pick what ever name you want to go by,some people will sign up under several nicknames
