You can't chalk it up to any one thing, because everyone is different in personality and motivation.
Some do it to feel good about themselves (by putting others down).
Some are bored and get a kick out of poking someone else or ticking them off.
Some are actually amused by their own creative cruelties.
Some are trying to impress others with their slickness, wit, and aggression.
Some are clueless and not yet at the maturity to realize the impact their comments have on people who need help.
A few are probably sociopathic in tendency and enjoy the pain they cause other people.
Some of the questions here are obviously asked in the same vein -- people with too much time on their hands, who are just out to chat, etc. So the answers don't need to be serious per se.
It's the questions where people are obviously struggling with some emotional pain, and yet some people are clueless or cruel or immature enough to make fun of them, that really sort of irk me. It's amazing what amount of emotional damage a stupid, senseless comment on an electronic forum can cause.

listen up Assbag/s, for I am one of the people who answers your feeble questions like a jerk!!!!!! I know it's nice to think that the people who are mean and popular in school hit the peak of life at 18. Not true. I'm having a great time, I got a kick-as.s job with some good perks, and I'm trading up to a better job in a year or two, and I'm as happy as I ever was. I know that's not what people want to hear, but its often times the truth.
As for the answers...... I do this because I get bored easily, and it passes the time in-between events. Do I care about other peoples feelings? NO. Rip on me right back. It's fun. I don't think a free online forum is a place I would go to make myself "look better", espicially given the fact that the majority of participants are living proof that the public school system is a failure as well as a compelling argument for genocide and mass sterilization. Is this funny? Yeah, a bit. It's not much, but if I said you were far too sensitive to ever find a mate and would be better off ending your lif to ensure a worthier vessel gets the oxygen you waste, well, thats good for a chuckle.
Really though, dont take it personally spaz. Think about the fact that most guys insult each other as a way of displaying friendship. Example: I walk up to a friend and he says; "what's up Fa.g?", and I respond with "not much, how are you you assh0le?". think of it as a person being totally honest, You sissy-crybaby-waste-of-space-parents-swinging-by-a-rope-in-the-closet-rectal-wart-pansy!

It really depends upon the question asked. Maybe some feel that the question is inane and not worth their time to answer - and maybe others do think that they are being funny in the way they answer certain questions.
Maybe for some, the question asked brings up old, painful memories and the person simply does not want to be reminded.
Thus, one might answer harshly.

Well, I'll try to answer this one. I do have a horrible self-esteem, but I, generally, try to be as helpful as I can. I believe one "looks better" if they answer like a decent human being and not an uncivilized savage.

Not necessary, sometimes people ask really stupid or awkward questions. That you are forced to reply to them harshly.
Some people do answer harshly but unintentionally.
