When I can't sleep I lie in bed and meditate. I'm not very good at it, so I usually fall asleep before I get to a meditative state.
What you do is lie there with your eyes closed. Keeping still. Movement will break an incoming meditatice state, and probably make you more restless. Take really long slow deep breaths. Exhale slowly as well. Your mind will probably start wandering and you will forget about the breathing.
When this happens, just start the breathing over again. Repeat as neccesary until you either fall asleep, or fall into meditation.

Once upon a time, there was a land where fairies once lived. But now lay dead ...strewn across the landscape like fireflies who's time has passed. Their wings destroyed by the feet of the inhabitants who have repressed the land with wooden cabins and construction materials for building additions to accomodate their wives needs in accomplishing their tasks easier. The man who owned the land had a thick mustache and looked like a big lumber jack. His wife has passed on years ago, so he was raising his 7 year old daughter alone. She always would pick up the dead fairies and her father would always yell at her to put the filthy detestaments back down on the ground. She felt compassion for the dead creatures and only dropped one once but never again as she remembered hearing the crack of a leg from its dead little body. Sometimes when her father wasn't looking she would slap her big shaggy dog named Hoy, because he would eat the fairies all the time, and this upset her because she felt their may not be any fairies left one day for her to look at. Which is what eventually happened when the girl turned 80. But she kept one fairie in a jewlery box near her bed and showed it to her granddaughter before she died. After she died, the granddaughter went to the jewlery box to look for the fairie, but it wasn't there to be found. That's when she turned around, and Hoy burped. The End. good night.

Breathe deeply, think of nice thoughts like being at the seashore and imagine hearing the sound of the surf crashing on the shore.

When I can't go to sleep... I repeat to myself "I can't go to sleep... I can't go to sleep" in my head. And inevitably after a while I go to sleep. I think it must be some form of "reverse psychology"? Good luck.
