Jesus Christ!!! NO! You're not a racist if you don't want a black person as a roommate!! I'm serious!! In this society we are still a bit segregated and you can't blame yourself for that!! If you're not comfortable with a black person then there's a reason, but it's not necessarily a racist reason! Maybe you were conditioned to think a certain way by others and you just need time to recondition yourself before you can come into your own feelings. If it makes you uncomfortable then do what makes you feel right. Don't be peer pressured because people say it's wrong. People are jerks, that's why racisim exists in this world. Nobody is a racist!! People just don't see the big picture is all. Racisim is just a word, but time teaches us alot of things and one thing it teaches everyone is the importance of compassion!! bye.

Also...none of the people who are calling you racist, would accept a black roommate either. Well, they might initially, but with a few days they would change their tune real fast. Neither would they live in a black neighborhood or frequent any situation dominated by blacks. All that is assuming the blacks would allow them to. Which they would not. Blacks HATE white people. That is perhaps the biggest reason to avoid one for a roommate. He will be hostile toward you. And there is a good chance that hostility will turn violent.

Depends how you define racism. If we define racism as anyone who refuses to room with a black person, then you are a racist. If we define racism as anyone who does harm to a black person because they are black, then it gets murkier because now we have to define what we mean by "harm". OK, I am smiling here.
Please read "Black Like Me" by a man named Griffin. Here is the story of a white man in the south in the '50s who medically turned his skin black so he could experience what it was to be black in the segregated south. This book is his experience. It is powerful.
A person can't help what they feel but they can make a start by exposing themselves to new ideas. Yes definitely don't room with a black person because you are not ready for it. Certainly don't go out of your way to prove you are not a racist. Having a black person as a roommate just to prove how unprejudiced you are will not work. A black person will see right through it.
Now don't beat yourself up about this. There are plenty of blacks who would never room with a white person. A lot of it has to do with how we were raised and where we were raised, and what our experiences are. All I know is that a black person is a person just like me. I am a person who happens to be in white skin. He is a person who happens to be in black skin. In Black Like Me, the author was the very same person in white skin and black skin. The very same person. Made no difference what skin he was in.

You probably don't think that you are, but others would assume that you are. Maybe you just don't feel comfortable in the company of others that you can't relate to skin wise lol. I remember freshmen year of college I had a white kid who thought he was black as a roomate, after he got kicked out for various offenses and drug possesions, I got ANOTHER wigger this time even more of an asshole, but who didn't use drugs. I would take a black, white, asian, indian, mexican, navajo, whatever roomate anyday as long as they aren't complete posers or pricks. By the way Im not white or black.

That you're asking the question suggests that you are open to changing your mind.
Think about the ideas you have about people (black, white or purple) and where you got them. Some of them might be true, but a lot of them would be true about individuals from any other race as well. In the end it's the person, not the colour, that matters.

YES TO SOME EXTENT YOU ARE. And your also not very confident, and your probably a little on the uninteresting side to not even be curious about a black roomate. I mean people are people no matter what the color, but the black culture has a vibrant color all its own. Havent you ever wanted to see it clearer.

Honestly, a little. Maybe you should be open about it and have a black roommate for once. It could open your eyes and make you change your mind about why you don't want a black roommate anyway.
