Her street is riddled with drug needles and has refused to pay her council tax after months of complaining to the local council,so they jail her.
But magitrates have been told to try not to send people to jail because of overcrowding.
Should she have been sent to jail.....
Would you still pay for a service if thought you were'nt getting value for money or is the law the law.

Go get her a good lawyer and sue the local counsel for not being able to provide good living conditions to an elder person and then endangering her health with the jail sentence. No, she was right in the first place. In your place I'd go to the papers and make a big scandal over it. That will draw some attention and will force them to do their damn job people pay taxes for!

This is England2006. The jobsworts that sent her to court are only part of the problem. Draconian laws are also part of it and lets not blame the unfortunate judges who have to implement the laws or the cops who have to enforce them.

But as long as we have brave, upstanding, totally focussed 69 year old grandmothers who can tell the whole bloody system where she is getting on and off we will be saved some day from this unbelievable stupidity.

In England "The Law is the Law" because the people are beaten into subjection. How many other country would permit it?

Unfortunately all first world economies will respond the same way.
If you cannot pay your tax, leniency and a payment plan with maybe some financial relief is the norm.
If you refuse to pay your tax, for whatever reason, it is seen as an attack on the government. If we all thought we could do it, we would all dream up excuses.
Also governments have been brought down by widespread refusal to pay tax, so they tend to snuff it out pretty quickly.
This kind of protest is usually a martyr one as the result will always be the same. For everyone, regardless.
Any other form of non-violent protest is better, if your intention is not to bring down the government.

I don't want to pay my 3 1/2 pence for bloody Prince Charles but I have to! What if we all refused to pay our council tax - where would the council get the money to do anything? If she wants anything to change she should continue to pay - not be a drain on the rest of us who subsidise those who can't or won't pay.

She should have calculated how much of her Council Tax was to be used for street cleaning, Policing her street, Social Workers, and drug rehabilitation, and then withheld that part of her CT. Then the Council could not take her to Court for non-payment.

She has my sympathy. But the answer to to problem is that we should have an effective legal mechanism in place where we can hold our councils to account for incompetence and failing to provide adequate services. I bet we can find examples of this council spending thousands of pounds on silly things to satisfy some councillors' egos.

If her street is that bad, they'll probably use her house as a squat while she's doing her time. You really need to consider the far reaching consequences before embarking on a course of action. I would like to say that she's got guts and principles though.
Just look after her property while she's away.

Its disgraceful that we are treating a pensioner in this manner, Shame on you Derby Council. Why should she part with her money when Derby Council are not doing the basics for her.
