Globes are tilted -- the angle is about 23.5 degrees -- because that is the angle between the axis of rotation of the Earth and the normal of the Ecliptic. The Ecliptic is the orbital plane of the Solar System.

The tilt is responsible for the seasons. If the angle was zero degrees, the Sun would always travel the same apparent path through the sky (over the equator, of course) and there would be no seasons. The reason the seasons change is in summer, the pole of the Earth is tilted toward the Sun and more light falls on that hemisphere, warming it up. On the opposite hemisphere, pointed more away from the sun, less light falls and it's colder. Since the tilt of the axis remains more or less constant, the seasons change as the Earth orbits the sun, warming up opposite hemispheres alternately.

The reason for the Earth's tilt is unknown. Some think a large object (large comet, for example) hit the Earth soon after it was formed (at least long enough ago that other evidence of being hit has faded away).

The only effect of no tilt would be a lack of seasons. You wouldn't have the heat of summer or cold of winter.

That would have to have some effect on which species were best suited to populate the Earth. It would especially eliminate the need to migrate with the seasons, which would slow the spread of new species. The types of life populating the Earth today would almost certainly have to be drastically different.

Other than a whole new set of conditions that could produce completely different results, having no tilt wouldn't make Earth inhospitable to humans. In fact, the growing season would last year round, making it easier for early humans to survive in more northern latitudes.

I had nothing to do with it, it was tilted when I got here!

Not a big deal. Most planets are tilted, it's just the way they ended up.

If the earth were not tilted, if it in fact was perpedicular to its orbit around the sun, there would be no change in seasons. Days wouldn't get longer or shorter over the course of the year. Weather would be pretty much the same year round, but very different as you moved between the equator and the poles. If life had evolved under these conditions, plants, animals and other organisms would be adapted to this sameness in the weather.

If the earth suddenly jumped into this angle from the one it holds now, that would be a problem for the people on earth due to the sudden disruption in the gravity that keeps us on the planet. If we all managed to hang on (that's a big if), the mass extinctions would spread from one species to another within a few years.

The first species to go would be the ones that are adapted to and dependent on seasonal changes: deciduous trees, migratory birds, land mammals, and whales. Then the species that depend on those species, and so forth.

Maybe homo sapiens would adapt to depend on those species that managed to survive or thrive in the new conditions. Maybe not.

seasons are caused by the tilt of the earth's rotation on it's axis relative to the plane of it's revolution around the sun.
