anyone else a little worried that the religious are in control of our nation's government? these people that are supposed to make important possibly life altering and future shaping decisions that are supposedly based on facts and research and reflect our citizen's hopes and concerns, tend to make their decisions based on the basis of their religious backgrounds. i don't know about you, but i don't want some guy who believes that jesus is going to "take us home" next year to be calling the shots in washington or have any sort of power at all. they world may very well end soon, but i don't want that to effect mine or anyone else's lives today.

Honestly, I would not be opposed to our govrnment basing many of its policies on the teachings of Jesus Christ. The problem is is that these "Christians" have very little of Christ about them and their actions. Therein lies the real problem.

Think about it, for a minute. Christ's teachings are quite secular for the most part. It's when people who believe that they are the only ones who know how God thinks and what God and Jesus REALLY meant deciding that their interpretaion is the only Ture & Correct Version and try impose that on the rest of that I have a huge problem with.

If it were not for religion the vast majority of wars would not have happened and millions would not have died.

The Crusades pitched Christian against Muslim and Bush & Blairs speechifying using christian terms has at least some responsibility for the way many muslims feel anger against the west.

Both the Catholic church and church of England have caused many wars and deaths in the cause of their religions.

The terrorists in Ireland used religion to hide behind.

Government should be totally banned from invoking religion.

Turkey is a good example. It was ruled by religion and in a very poor condition until Atturk came along and ordered that the government must have nothing to do with religion. Turkey then flourished.

Another very reason is that even in the States and Britain practicing Christians are in the minority. There are many other religions in both countries, Jews, Muslims Sikhs, Buddists and many others plus all those funny Christian Sects such as Scientologists, mormons and their like. There are also a very significant number who either do not have religion or care very little about it.

Why should Christians dictate that everyone observe Sunday as a special day and close shops but not do exactly the same for the Jewish observance of Saturday. Why do they not dictate that everyone stops at prayer times each day for the Muslims.

No religion should be able to dictate to people not of their faith how they should live their lives. Politicians only use religion to try and look good anyway.

Time to start a campaign to keep religion out of politics and save lives!

You have little to worry about. Separation of Church and State is written into the Constitution. Freedom of Religion does not mean freedom from religion. If public policy shares ideas of certain religions, that doesn't mean there will be a religious take over. Issues of morality unite many faiths, and may be seen in public policy. But that in no way should be seen as a religious take over.

So what do you suggest, exactly? Ban people who believe in religion from seeking public office?

If you are so worried, get out there and vote, and get your friends to vote. There is a large group of people who just sit home and do nothing on election day. These are the ones who you should be worried about. They are the ones who, by abstaining, vote in the religious.

Given the evangelicalism of John Ashcroft & co., I used to be worried that the lack of a viable exit strategy for the invasion Iraq was because some of them were actually attempting to fulfill conditions for Armageddon like the destruction of Babylon.

Now I think it was just incompetence.

But Bush's rhetoric was very much a holy war. It's terrifying, especially the way that they use religion to inflame hatred and prejudice to gain support for their ideas.

when extremists rule the world is bad, nomatter if they're religious fanatics, national socialists with a vision of granduer (hitler, mussolini), corrupted revolutionaries (lenin, stalin, the bolshevics in general, mao, the N Koreean guy), or simply tyrants (saddam, gaddafi / Qadhafi etc).

i'm sure nobody would have anything against jesus or the buddha leading a state (hypotatically speaking). we shouldn't fear those who are wise and intelligent, who happen to be religious, communists or whatever, we should fear the extremists who happen to be religious, communists or whatever. the first will use their allegiance as support, while the latter as weapons.

I agree - I am concerned.
I fear for the future because of religion and politics - both will destroy the world. I just hope it's later rather than sooner.

I have been afraid of this for 18 years - since I was 10 years old.
I've had nightmares.
