I'd agree that there's been some bad play calling but....I don't agree that Australia shouldn't have lost. First, that red card on Italy was garbage....didn't deserve a red. Australia couldn't capitalize on the man advantage. Then Lucas Neill slid down on Grosso. Why would he slide down in the box? It was an absolute stupid move on his part. The referee had no choice. And because it happened in the box, it's an automatic penalty kick.

Holland-Portugal match is a far cry from the "beautiful game". The refereeing is certainly not for the good of the game. World Cup 2006 will be remembered as the tournament with the most yellows and reds with 2 referees redcarded by FIFA who i feel deserve a yellow card for letting refereeing standard drop this low..
I really feel sorry for Australia to have gone out that way but they too share the blame for not having scored against 10-men Italy for a good 40 minutes - their strategy to go extra 30min backfired. 3-time world champ Italy is very WC-savvy with intelligent players and they were 'looking' for that penalty when the opportunity presented itself - there was contact in the box, Fabio Grosso falling over Lucas Neill's body - ref decided for Italy in the dying seconds. Football is this cruel; it'll kick you back in the teeth if you lose focus. Whatever praise heaped on the Aussies WC heroic debut cannot be enough consolation.

Yes ! I agree first ! Australia played better but the team was not such an experienced team and Italy was better than them in this case !
second : Portugal had to win the match ( because I say :-" ) and It was almost equal , not just because of the refers but because of the tough players you saw those red and yellow cards !
every thing that happens in a match is a part of the match and no one can say any thing about that because IT IS A PART OF THE MATCH even unfair decisions

Australia was robbed, everyhting was set for Italy to win.
Holland was set to win too, but somehow Portugal managed to resist against the ref's will to help Holland get through.
This smells of farse. The countries nearer the host always have an easier way. Mark my words.

ya you are right. did you saw astralia vs italy match that totti in final minuts inside the astralian penalty area pushed the ball to other side and then willingly ran over the fallen defender, to earn a penalty kick in the end thats not the game. when you can change the direction of the ball why can't you change your direction. and moreever footballers are trained to change direction while running with ball. thats really samefull and poor reffering.

Australia outplayed Italy and the game would have been Austaralia's if it went into extra time! Now Australia deserve more respect throughout the world. The most entertaining Football that I have watched in many years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a million. dudes be honest how a lot of you had g/f's (or b/f) you easily loved and did not only be with them cuz they beloved you? one 2. what would you do in this difficulty? at the same time as my buddy requested me i'd say ummmmm a deer with a field on its neck nicely ummm one jumped in the front of my motor vehicle and that i couldnt bring about time. then i'd search for the letters then at the same time as there no longer there tell him and run out of the door so he wouldnt kill me. at the same time as he chases me i'd ask who has a puppy deer besides.
