OK, I'm an '80s child, and quite frankly, I kinda can tolerate pop music now. I think music (again) has come full circle. My daughter and I listen to the same radio station.
But, like you said, (in my opinion), everyone has their own taste in music, so, to each their own. I promise, once I know what music you like, I'll never torture you with the music I choose from the jukebox....

There is good and there is crap in every genre of music. Art in general, for that matter. But, it's very much a matter of personal taste. Not something you can answer for another person.
There have also always been "purists" in music. Those who feel commercialism is a cop-out. Until the checks start rolling in :)

Amen to that!!!
Pop music turns those that love it into mindless idiots.
That song "My Humps"...WTF? How much more degrading can a song get? Seriously, what kind of message does that song send to the pop music audience, which is mostly comprised of preteen and teenage girls?
Musicians like Ben Folds/Five need more attention - at least his music has some kind of message.
"Go ahead you can laugh all you want to, I've got my philosophy, keeps my feet on the ground..."

I don't. I definitely prefer more independent bands, but there are at least a few pop songs that I really enjoy (I'm addicted to 80s pop).

I get the impression that you hate the commercialization of it more than the music itself.
Welcome to life outside of the Mainstream.
