There are several good openings. One of the most common is to move the e2 pawn to e4. This gets a pawn to the center of the board and allows the queen and a bishop to be able to move out. This was Bobby Fishers favorite opening move for white.

i don't think there's a "commonly used" one. as far as i can tell, there have been numerous volumes written only on the first and second moves in chess.
