I get it! It's a Rory Emerald joke! And Tobe is thrown in for good measure. But anyway, it's a great classic movie with everyone you mention BUT Rory, but put in Bonnie Bedelia because she was great! It's about a dance marathon circa 1930's, and people are cheating on their spouses, and it's all very complicated but very good. Unfortunately for me it came out about the same time as "Bless the Beasts and the Children" Which WAS about shooting horses for sport...so I always thought they were the same movie!

Jane Fonda, Michael Sarrazin and Gig Young all appeared in prominent roles in the 1969 film, 'They Shoot Horses, Don't They?' as did Susannah York, Bruce Dern, Bonnie Bedilia and Red Buttons. I have never heard of Rory Emerald and there is no such person listed in the cast for this or any other film I am aware of (he has no listing on IMDb which basically means he does not exist).
The film was indeed directed by Sydney Pollack and was adapted from a novel by Horace McCoy, a little-known Hollywood screenwriter of the '30s, '40s and '50s. The story concerns a Depression-era dance marathon in which the participants must remain dancing on the floor of a shabby dance hall until the last couple remaining wins the cash prize. Character insights reveal that these are some seriously desperate people who are willing to do just about anything to win. The movie itself ranks as one of the single most unpleasant and deeply depressing I have ever seen and, although well-acted, I would definitely NOT recommend it.
