Why not use DynDNS.org or NoIP.com to have a free domain point to your own system and host your site on your own system?
That way your only limitation is your bandwidth and hard disk size.
Of course this solution is only good for people with unlimited high speed Internet accounts, but I personally do this for running my own mail server etc. You need of course to dedicate a machine to running whatever server services you want that will be on 24/7.
I suggest the free version of 602 lansuite to host your webpage/mail/proxys etc etc etc.
Obvious benefits,
no popups/banners/moderators/censors/etc...
Otherwise, see the post by "Dreams" below. It offers a free domain for 1 year

To host your site for free, I would highly recommend the following 2 sites.
Awardspace -> http://www.awardspace.com
50webs -> http://www.50webs.com
Both of these sites allow you to host for free and does not have any advertisement pop ups like those provided by geocities.
I have sites hosted on both the companies. Example
Awardspace -> http://www.wanginternet.com
50webs -> http://cctvcamera.50webs.com
Also, read a review I wrote on Awardspace at http://www.wanginternet.com/free-web-hosting-with-no-advertising.htm
Hope it helps, feel free to ask me for any additional help required.

I've used tripod.com since 1997; it's been free all this time, quite reliable, and storage space keeps getting bigger. You can choose between banner ads and pop ups--that why it' free
