Pearland, Texas is one of the fastest growing small towns close to Houston. It is south of Houston off of Hwy 288. Housing ranges from the $150K and up. There are many master planned communities, but also land for sale if you want to build your own. Pearland has good schools, low crime, and has organized activities for kids though the Dad's club, YMCA, and during the summer the high school coaches put on sports clinics. You can find churches in all faiths and non-denotational. There is a riding school if your kids like to ride horses. Pearland is located close enough to Houston that you can travel to all sides of Houston within a 30--45 minute time span. Rush hour traffic is building, but nearly as bad is on the north or southwest side of Houston. Pearland is currently building 2 hospitals, 2 large scale shopping centers (already have 1 good shopping area), and has a good assortment of restaurants. There are great medical doctors in Pearland--being close to Houston's medical center many specialty doctors have opened practices in Pearland. Being part of Brazoria county, you have lower car insurance rates. Try to avoid Harris or Galveston county as these are the two counties with the highest insurance rates.

Houston is a nasty, dirty city. I lived there for 22 years, and it was awful. I now live in San Antonio, and the difference is amazing. People are friendlier, the air is cleaner, the streets are cleaner, there is not nearly as much traffic, the Alamo is here, and it is near New Braunfels. I love it!

And if you have family and friends in Houston that you want to stay in touch with, it is only 3 1/2 hours away. The schools are really good and there are some really nice neighborhoods.

San Antonio is one of the fastest growing places right now, and alot of really nice, new homes are being built. There is a big housing boom and you could probably find a good deal.

You should not have trouble finding friends because everyone is so much nicer here than Houston. On the freeway people even slow down to let you get into traffic! Unheard of in Houston!

The 290 at the beltway area in northwest Houston. Cy-Fair schools are the most respected in Houston. A lot of the neighborhoods in the area are dominated by young families. Far enough from the mess that is inner Houston but only a 20 minute drive to downtown.

Live on the north side if at all possible. Look into the Spring/Woodlands area. Or the Kingwood/Humble area. They're nice, the schools are good and have fairly small classes. Living outside the city limit of Houston allows lower taxes and yet it's still close enough to head downtown for what it offers. Plus, when you want to get out of town, you're already up north.

Katy, Texas.

I have lived all over the US, but I made sure I made it back to my home town, Katy. Katy is such a great place to live, close to the city but with that home town feel. The school district is one of the best.

The only down side it the traffic if you work in Houston. It can get pretty tough driving back and forth everyday. I would recommend working as close to home as possible.

Plus, in Katy, the south side of I-10 is a better area than the north side.

i was born and raised in houston so i think i am qualified on a few answers. i love the area of humbe, atascocita ,and kingwood. the housing prices are average. u just have to look hard. the school districts range from moderate to elite and their is an assortment of private schools and programs available. jobs and the airport are all central to these areas. the traffic is not as grueling as dowtown once u learn the side streets. i always loved th greenbelt trails which our family walked and rode bikes on frequently. u can live among the trees off the main roads and still be central to everything in these locations. lemme know if u want any more specifics.

The Woodlands are great, just up I-45 from Houston (north). I grew up around there and can recommend it. Also consider the Champions Area (also N. of Houston) off of FM 1960 (in Klein)

I'm not sure how far south you are willing to go, but when I was 13 my family moved from Los Angles to The Rio grandee valley (south Texas, Edinburgh TX to be exact) It was the best thing that could have happened to me. I went to some of the best schools in the area and every one who i came in contact was so nice and friendly. I've since moved to Chicago but i still have my best friend from Texas and my warm memories. I definitely would go back to raise a family.
