apart from the obvious, it can be an allusion to an old saying of having "intestinal fortitude" as a way of saying a person has courage or "guts" So one may say that having abdominal strength is another more poetic way of saying having courage.

Houdini could take a cannonball fired into his stomach without harm. unfortunately some wise guy came up to him and punched him in the stomach and he died from it because he was not given the opportuinty to prepare for the punch or harden his stomach muscles. that is abdominal strength.
