Well there are a few differnt reasons it can happen. Infection of the hair folicles, Irritation , and ingrown hairs.
The best way to shave is to shave with a new or sharp razor and shaving cream for sensative skin, shave in one direction to limit the irritation, and do not apply alot of pressure. After you get done clean off with water, and let it air dry. Drying it with a towel will only irritate your skin, and possibly clog your pores. After it dries use rubbing alcohol a couple of times a day until the irritation goes down.
And yes it will itch but the Alcohol helps, and if you continue to shave that will go away as well.
Just be careful, and take your time, if you are going to shave then shave if all.

Try Nair for the bikini area. It is a lotion you put on for about 5 min and then you can wipe away the hair. If you shave, do it in the direction of the hair growth or you will get bumps and ingrown hairs. Always use a sharp razor and a good shaving oil or cream. You can shave it all or leave a little strip in the middle. It's just a personal preference.

Uhm, I bought one of those little battery powered bikini line groomers. I use it to shave the hair close and then I lather up with a moisture rich shaving creme and use a really sharp razor (dull ones will knick the skin) and gently and slowly shave against the the growth of the hair. Make sure you moisturize it really well afterward. It will itch like crazy when the hair starts to grow back the first few times, but that goes away once your skin adjusts. Good luck!
p.s. use the bikini trimmer to get the delicate area.

shaving that area can be tricky. I find it is best to go to a salon that will wax it for you. That way you can avoid ingrown hairs and possibly nicking yourself (OW!) - also, they can do your area in the cutest designs. many like a heart at the top or a flower design. others like just a trim along the sides. at any rate, allow a professional to handle this- its too important an area to tackle with a razor.

Don't, I repeat, don't use a new razor!!! But use one of those chick ones with four blades. And it is always nice to leave a little landing pad. You know, like a Hitler Mustache. Those look hot on all girls.
