If I was Bell Helicopter or other copter company I would be so angry at military for disclosing such bogus info. All Apache copters crashed, none shot down. Really?

Wow, I never thought that sooooo many people who suddenly decide to bring down the technology used in combat field. Compare stats with any previous wars - even the first gulf war - and never before has there been a ratio of nearly 9 crash for 1 shot down. And we have better machines than 10, 15, 50 years ago!

reason.... the best of the best is not chosen when aircraft and military eguipment, or for that matter government contracts are accepted by our government. its the vendor/manufacturer that put the clowns in office that get these contracts. It is fact that a simple thing like dust can take these helicopters down. as for someones comments on the lost life in the helicopter, blame those who voted for this fool and his cabinet. the contract was pushed along by his dumb republican father.

I see that the emotional anti everything answers have kicked in already.

Lets just take a step back and consider the facts. Military helicopters are much more prone to crashing than civilian helicopters because of the way in which they are operated.

You will finds that plenty crash in the course of peaceful duties, but particularly when they are being flown "tactically" on exercises.

Add to that the additional stresses of being flown hard in a combat zone, with irregular maintenance, harsh environmental conditions and double the number of flying hours than normal, plus a stressed and overworked crew, things are going to go wrong.

Imagine if you took your new and in good condition road car and gave it to an Indy 500 race crew for a day. Would you really expect to get it back in any kind of useable condition?

Military helicopters are also quite difficult to shoot down unless you have the right equipment. Clearly there are famous examples of RPG's scoring lucky hits on Blackhawks both in Somalia and in Iraq, but thats what they are...lucky hits in the right place, and those weapons certainly are not designed or capable of being front line helicopter killers.

Apache's particularly are built like tanks and very difficult to fatally damage, although like anything they have their weak spots which are vulnerable.

Therefore when a helo goes down the most likely cause of the crash before we know all the facts is that it is either a mechanical or pilot failure. There is no point in immediately saying that its been shot down because all you are doing is handing the enemy a propaganda victory they probably havent earned.

In every case however where it has been as a result of enemy action the news report it as soon as its known, so I really don't see the problem.

Any helicopter is a very complex machine. The conditions over there are not perfect. If you have evidence that ALL Apache choppers were shot down, call the NYT and CBS News. If it makes Bush look bad, they'll print it and put it on TV without vetting it first.

My cousin flew choppers for several years in the Marines. They are much more complex and involved than a fixed-wing craft. That they fly at all is a miracle.

Tell ya what, Crudites... Why don't you stop hiding behind your internet anonymity, take a step away from the computer in your mom's basement and ask your questions in person at the nearest recruiting station? Maybe then those "brown stains" will be real instead of just a figment of your juvenile imagination.

Helicopters crash in training all the time. The Iraqi enviornment is tough on all machinery. Very fine dust. And for the record I am against this war.

It's all about PR, keeping faith in our military. Would you be more comfortable hearing that some untrained F*** shot down a highly trained pilot? Accidents happen, even in peace time, they're just reported more during war......

I'm finding it very uncomfortable and amazing that your question was asked without a SINGLE THOUGHT to the human life that is involved in these accidents! Are you so far removed from reality that it's all about companies and money to you?? Where is your humanity??!
